{"id":156,"date":"2016-06-16T20:16:19","date_gmt":"2016-06-17T01:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/employcoblog.wordpress.com\/?p=156"},"modified":"2017-07-07T14:44:10","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T19:44:10","slug":"transgender-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.employco.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/16\/transgender-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"Transgender Equality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has been a little over one year since Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, announced a change to her name and appearance on the cover of Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n<p>With only around 0.3% &#8211; 3.0% of the U.S. adult population identified as transgender, employers may mistakenly believe that it&#8217;s not an issue worth their time. However, since the transgender population and legal compliance issues are growing, proactive employers are preparing for a transgender workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Legislative Guidance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transgender employee discrimination is prohibited under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and under several state laws.<\/li>\n<li>OSHA and the Department of Labor released a &#8220;Guide to Restroom Access for Transgender Workers&#8221; that requires companies to allow their employees to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Modify your employee handbook, policies and training to include transgender in the list of protected classes<\/li>\n<li>Engage transgender employees in an &#8220;interactive process&#8221; to discuss their preference on the use of bathrooms, name, email address, pronouns and company announcement, if any<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To listen to Employco&#8217;s recent podcast on transgender equality in the workplace, please\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wn204.infusionsoft.com\/app\/linkClick\/8927\/9cec6616c5e27b6d\/31811\/0619612ad2e2a1f3\"><strong>click here<\/strong><\/a>.
