Estimates say that this means over 4.4 million workers will be looking at a raise, but critics fear it will come at a severe cost for businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Wilson, president of Employco USA and employment trends expert says, \u201cPast numbers show that increasing the minimum wage has a direct and negative impact not only on businesses, but on workers themselves. Research by economists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w20724\">Jeffrey Clemens and Michael Wither<\/a> of the University of California-San Diego showed that minimum wage increases were responsible for 14 percent of the job losses suffered between 2006 and 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Wilson says, only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/reports\/minimum-wage\/2015\/home.htm\">1.8 percent<\/a> of Americans earn minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson explains, \u201cThe reality is that most companies endeavor to pay a competitive wage to lure talent and ensure employee loyalty. However, certain positions (such as retail and hospitality) have a very thin margin of profit. These employers can only afford to pay workers minimum wage if they want to stay profitable and remain in businesses. An increase hits their businesses hard, which is why so many people have actually <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/timworstall\/2016\/07\/26\/seattles-minimum-wage-rise-is-reducing-employment-in-seattle-i-was-right-in-predicting-this\/#5f05c83e4e6c\">lost their jobs<\/a> due to the minimum wage increases across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is another downside as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, minimum wage jobs have been employment opportunities for young adults and those first entering the workforce. When these jobs are reduced, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2015\/07\/29\/investing\/buffalo-wild-wings-ceo-minimum-wage-teens\/\">teens and other inexperienced workers suffer<\/a> as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Wilson says that minimum wage increases could come under attack from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/get-there\/wp\/2016\/12\/08\/trump-names-andrew-puzder-a-fast-food-ceo-and-critic-of-substantially-raising-the-minimum-wage-to-head-the-labor-department\/?utm_term=.da05f8d47e04\">Andrew Puzder<\/a>, President Trump\u2019s pick for Secretary of Labor. \u201cPudzer is known for being against the minimum wage hike.
