But some people are questioning whether or not these layoffs are being performed in an equitable and legal fashion.<\/p>\n<p>For example, o<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/hilltv\/rising\/509219-journalist-zaid-jilani-blasts-chevron-for-using-diversity-as-a-way-to-spin\">il magnate Chevron<\/a> just made headlines due to their press release which said that their mass layoffs will lead to more diversity, as white males lost positions, giving women and minorities the opportunity to claim those leadership roles.<\/p>\n<p>The press release has <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/hilltv\/rising\/509219-journalist-zaid-jilani-blasts-chevron-for-using-diversity-as-a-way-to-spin\">been criticized<\/a> and sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/495844-chevron-layoffs-woke-white-diversity\/\">a larger conversation <\/a>about how employers should handle the layoff process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLayoffs and furloughs are really unavoidable right now,\u201d says Rob Wilson, President of Employco USA and employment trends expert. \u201cEspecially for those in the travel, hospitality, and event management fields. But that doesn\u2019t mean employers don\u2019t have to be very, very careful when it comes to how they put these layoffs into action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Wilson says employers have to carefully consider which employees they are letting go and why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to consider the demographics,\u201d he says. \u201cIf the department you are downsizing is nearly all older people, you could potentially be opening yourself to age discrimination complaints unless you can demonstrate exactly how the decision was made and that it was made fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/markets\/chevron-to-improve-diversity-ratio-amid-company-layoffs\">Wilson says <\/a>employers need to pay attention to the race, gender, and sexual orientation of their staff. \u201cAs Chevron proved, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/495844-chevron-layoffs-woke-white-diversity\/\">releasing white males <\/a>isn\u2019t without criticism.
