{"id":3543,"date":"2021-08-12T10:42:10","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T15:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.employco.com\/blog\/?p=3543"},"modified":"2021-08-12T10:42:10","modified_gmt":"2021-08-12T15:42:10","slug":"should-unvaccinated-staff-suffer-premium-surcharges-on-company-health-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.employco.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/12\/should-unvaccinated-staff-suffer-premium-surcharges-on-company-health-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"Should Unvaccinated Staff Suffer Premium Surcharges on Company Health Plans?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Employment trends expert weighs in on whether unvaccinated employees should be penalized \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.employco.com\/images\/blog\/Blog_Insurance-Increase.jpg\" alt=\"Health Insurance Increase\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" \/>With hopes of a return to normalcy slowly deteriorating thanks to the Delta variant and concerning upticks in COVID cases across the country, employers are struggling to find ways to stay afloat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/02\/opinion\/health-insurance-unvaccinated.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One way<\/a> that employers are trying to cut costs?<\/p>\n<p>By asking employees who have refused the COVID vaccination to pay a premium surcharge on their company\u2019s health plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany companies have led with a carrot approach when it comes to encouraging employee vaccinations, but unfortunately, vaccine hesitancy is leading many employers to reach for the stick now,\u201d says Rob Wilson, President of Employco USA and employment trends expert.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Wilson says that the rationale behind such a decision is not just to encourage more employees to get vaccinated, but also to hold employees accountable for the higher healthcare costs which can be a risk of skipping the jab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf companies have a lot of unvaccinated employees, then their health costs will certainly go up as a result.
