Question: What should I do if one of my employees got married 2 months ago and is asking to change their benefit plan enrollment now?
Answer: Most employee benefit elections can only be changed during the annual open enrollment period. However, certain qualifying events (e.g., marriage, divorce, birth of a child, etc.) may allow employees to enroll in coverage, make changes to their existing elections, or cancel coverage during the plan year. In most cases, employees must notify their employer and complete the required enrollment forms within 30 days of the qualifying event. Certain events, such as Medicaid or CHIP eligibility changes, may allow a longer notification period as permitted by law and plan rules.
