Connecticut Requires Employers to Provide Overtime Pay Code Notices – On May 11, 2026, Connecticut enacted a workforce bill, which, among other things, requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide notice of overtime pay codes to employees. The new overtime notice requirements take effect on Oct. 1, 2026.

Louisiana Amends Law Regarding Employment Certificates for Minors – Louisiana recently amended its law regarding employment certificates for minors. The amended law is effective as of May 11, 2026.

Tennessee Enacts Noncompete Restrictions – On May 7, 2026, Tennessee enacted House Bill (HB) 1034, as amended, which establishes a framework governing the enforceability of noncompete agreements. The law takes effect on July 1, 2026, and applies to any agreement entered into, renewed, or amended on or after that date.

Virginia Enacts Paid Sick Leave – Virginia Gov. Colorado Abigail Spanberger has signed into law a bill requiring employers to provide up to five days of paid sick leave (PSL) per year for employees to care for their own illness or an ill family member, or to take leave necessitated by domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking. Starting July 1, 2027, the paid leave requirement will be phased in over three years for successively smaller employers, until employers of all sizes are covered by 2029. The bill was signed on May 20, 2026.

Washington Updates Child Labor Rules – On May 19, 2026, Washington updated its agricultural and nonagricultural child labor rules to (among other things) implement three bills passed during the 2025 legislative session. The updated rules take effect July 1, 2026.
