Alaska Enacts Payroll Card Account Requirements – On June 18, 2026, Alaska enacted Senate Bill (SB) 79, which establishes requirements for employers that pay employee wages using payroll card accounts. The new law took effect on July 1, 2026.

Chicago Revises Rules for Fair Workweek Ordinance – The Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Office of Labor Standards (Department) revised the rules for the city’s Fair Workweek (FWW) Ordinance. The changes took effect on June 1, 2026.

Colorado Amends Its Artificial Intelligence Law – On May 14, 2026, Gov. Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 26-189 (SB 26-189), the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act (CO AI Act), which significantly amends the state’s original AI law (SB 24-205) with a streamlined framework centered on transparency, disclosure and targeted consumer protections. SB 26-189 applies to employers doing business in Colorado that use automated decision-making technology to materially influence consequential employment decisions. The CO AI Act goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2027.

Colorado Enacts State-level EEO-1 Reporting – On June 4, 2026, Colorado enacted House Bill (HB) 26-1207, requiring certain private sector employers to report EEO-1 workforce demographic data to the Colorado secretary of state beginning July 1, 2027. The law explicitly states that the Colorado state reporting will be required even if the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) ends federal EEO-1 reporting. Covered employers will be required to submit workforce demographic data in the same form as the federal EEO-1 reports.

Connecticut Requires Break Time to Breastfeed or Express Breast Milk – On May 11, 2026, Connecticut enacted a new law requiring employers to provide reasonable break times for employees to express breast milk for their nursing children or to breastfeed at the workplace, in addition to their scheduled breaks. The new law takes effect Oct. 1, 2026.

Connecticut Passes Tax Credit for Commuter Benefit – Connecticut has enacted a state tax credit for employer-provided transportation benefits, effective Jan. 1, 2027.

Iowa Imposes Penalties on Employers for Accepting False Social Security Numbers – On June 2, 2026, Iowa enacted Senate File (SF) 2218, which, among other things, prohibits employers from employing individuals who provide false Social Security numbers (SSNs). This law takes effect on July 1, 2026.
